Official Announcement – 2015 Exhibition and Show

We have been given the approval from AHS to host an official Exhibition and Show on June 27th, 2015. Our show in 2014 was a big hit, and we hope this year will be even better.

8:00a-11:00a      Registration / Classification / Placement.
Exhibitors may arrive with their exhibits and groom near the show location. A small grooming area will be provided. It is recommended you come to the show location with your exhibits already groomed. Friendly faces will be on hand to help you with your exhibits.

11:00a                No new entries accepted for placement. Only entries in the possession of the placement or classification committee will be accepted for judging. All other entries will be placed in the non-judged display area. The show chair will resolve discrepancies, and the decision will be final.

11:30a                Final placement and registration completed. This time allows for classification to complete entries that had been received at or before 11:00. This time also allows the placement committee to make final adjustments.

11:30a-1:00p      Exhibition Judging. Only judges, clerks and show chairs allowed inside judging area.

2015 CIDS Bus Trip

Plans are set for our bus trip this year, and we’re already signing people up to join us for a great adventure!

Join us on June 20th as we head South and West to see daylilies and other perennials on display.

We’ll depart from the JC Penny Parking lot in Springfield at 7:30am. From there, we’ll head to Cottage Gardens, on to Josephine’s for lunch (it’s a CIDS favorite!), and finally to the Missouri Botanical Garden for the afternoon. We plan to be back in Springfield at 6pm.

The cost for each participant is $30.

The flier can be viewed here with information for how to register to attend. Be sure to sign up soon before the bus fills up!

2015 Members-Only Auction, Potluck – June 7, 2015

Our next meeting is Sunday, June 7th, at 1pm, Rochester Community Bldg. Debra will open the doors at noon.
Last year we had too many desserts & not enough side dishes.  We ask you to consider bringing an appetizer, side dish or entrée instead of dessert. The club will provide the fried chicken. Please call Sandy at 498-7320 only if you will eat the  fried chicken so she knows how much to buy. Vegetarians be cool!
The potluck will be followed by a short meeting & the auction. Jacob needs the names of the plants you plan on donating so he can look the pictures up & put them in the slide show. Please send these to him at Br4un3r@gmail.com  now.
Sandy has been  planning & will prepare the plants from Selman’s. The Petersburg gals,
Ann & Margaret will be our auctioneers.  Bring your checkbooks & Daylily Dollars.
Good food, good company, new plants.  What more could you want?!

CIDS Meeting – Friday, April 10th, 7:00pm – Rochester Community Room

Our next meeting is Friday, April 10th, 7PM at  Rochester Community Building. We will go over the results of the survey we took. Jacob will give a program on using  the internet to find sites such as the AHS database, & exploring other online options.
The following meeting will be at our Potluck & Auction, June 7th, 1PM.  Sandy is ordering our plants  from Selman’s. Sandy has been to his garden &  says it’s exceptional.  If you plan on bringing donation plants for the auction please attach a label with all the AHS plant info.
Remember to E mail or send Jacob  the plant names  before the auction day so they can be in the slide show.
Our bus trip to Cottage Gardens, Josephine’s  & Missouri Botanical Gardens is June 20th. We will meet at the JC Penney parking lot between 7:00 & 7:15am .  Bus leaves at 7:30am. The cost is $30 per person. It would be a good idea to register & pay at the April 10th meeting to guarantee your  seat on the bus. If you don’ pay then you must pay by April 30th by sending a check to Debra Miller, 71 Laconwood, Springfield, Illinois 62712. After we know how many members are going we will know how many guests we can take. Debra will be taking names for a wait list. (More details attached)
Our  Daylily Show is Saturday, June 27th Washington Park Botanical Garden, 12-3.
The members Garden Tour & Picnic is July 11th, picnic at Lori Doolin’s in Glasgow,  Illinois.  More info & directions to follow.
Our annual Daylily Sale  is Saturday, August 1st, at Washington Park
Botanical Gardens 12-3. Vendors, this year your plants must have an attached label with the complete AHS information on it. Customers complained last year so let’s all accommodate them! Vendors are expected to arrive early to help with the club’s set up & your own setup. All donated plants also need the info tags on them & plants dug from the botanical garden will have them, also. Let’s keep it professional!

Another Successful Plant Sale

Our 2014 Plant Sale was quite a success for CIDS. Thank you to all who came and helped with this event, from digging and dividing to clean-up. Your help was greatly appreciated. For those who want to take care of their lovely lawn and garden, consider using some organic fertilizer for lawn care, that way you never have a sad looking garden.

Sоmе оf уоu may be fаmіlіаr with Tоnу Avеnt’ѕ Sо уоu wаnt tо ѕtаrt a nurѕеrу, a рrасtісаl yet entertaining book оn what іt takes tо jumр into thе business оf selling plants. While I’ve rеаd thе book, I doubt I’ll еvеr take thаt bіg оf a leap. But I dо sell рlаntѕ, аt a rаthеr lеѕѕ than brеаdwіnnіng ѕсаlе: аt mу annual spring plant ѕаlе, ѕооn іntо іtѕ tеnth edition.

Amаtеur plant ѕаlеѕ аrе ѕоmеthіng оf a time-honored tradition among thе gаrdеnіng сrоwd, and thеу соmе іn mаnу flаvоrѕ. Thrоugh thе уеаrѕ, I’vе received рlеntу of rеԛuеѕtѕ fоr іnfоrmаtіоn аnd tips frоm fеllоw аmаtеur ѕаlеѕреорlе (women actually – mу gender іѕ іn thе minority hеrе). Enough that I figure рuttіng it іntо wеb раgе fоrm might bе a gооd іdеа. So hеrе gоеѕ

Whу ѕеll рlаntѕ?
Gооd question! Sіnсе уоu mоѕt likely wоn’t get rісh from one-off рlаnt ѕаlеѕ, thеrе muѕt bе оthеr rеаѕоnѕ. Many рlаnt ѕаlеѕ are held tо bеnеfіt a wоrthу саuѕе, often a соmmunіtу оrgаnіzаtіоn. Bеѕіdеѕ generating mоnеу for thе organization, a ѕаlе mау аlѕо соntrіbutе to the саuѕе by rаіѕіng awareness and gооd will. Mу cause (fіndіng аn еxсuѕе аnd thе mеаnѕ to buу mоrе plants) isn’t quite ѕо lоftу. But I lіkе to think thаt bу рrоvіdіng a ѕоurсе оf рlаntѕ, mаnу оf thеm unuѕuаl, I’m doing my fеllоw lосаl gardeners a ѕеrvісе. And I’vе mеt mаnу gаrdеn еnthuѕіаѕtѕ thrоugh mу sale wіth whom mу раth mіght otherwise nеvеr hаvе сrоѕѕеd.

If you missed this sale, be sure to mark your calendars for our next Annual Plant Sale on Saturday, August 1st, 2015.
